Our Vision

Our church seeks to impact our community and the world by raising up people who’ve been transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ, and who seek to bring his renewing power into every sphere of life.

Our Mission

We desire to foster a community of love that reaches out with the historic Christian truths of the gospel by proclaiming, celebrating, and demonstrating God’s grace in Jesus Christ.

Our Aim

To be a church where people can:

  • Explore the claims of Jesus Christ.
  • Engage the life-giving authority of Scripture.
  • Expand their faith and trust in him through thoughtful and expectant worship.
  • Experience transformation within the safety of meaningful relationships in a gospel-filled, grace-oriented community.
  • Employ their resources for the glory of God and the welfare of the community.
  • Extend the hope of Jesus Christ to our community and beyond.

The gospel well stated is this:

While we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared dream.

While we are all sinful—God so loved the world. This double gospel formulation – sinful yet loved – highlights the radical, extraordinary nature of God’s free, unconditional grace offered in Jesus Christ. This is the essence of our community and is the key motivation for all we do.

Maupin Avenue Church believes that Jesus Christ, through his Word, sacraments, and prayer, bends down to speak to us that he has come to redeem, renew, heal, and restore us and even all of his creation. God smiles upon us in the person and work of Jesus Christ. And with delight we smile back. Our response to God’s grace in Jesus Christ is give him glory and to smile back in enjoyment with our whole lives by seeking to:

Love God, Love People, Love Rowan,
Because We Have Been Given
One Life, One Love, and One Way Home

Whatever your beliefs or doubts, Maupin Avenue is a place for you to come and explore Christianity, to grow in your understanding of who Jesus is and to know what it means to follow him in community with others. We are here for those already persuaded to follow Jesus, and for those not yet. We are here for the lost and the found, those burdened and recovering, those seeking something more than self. Come and explore the Gospel and the Christian life at Maupin Avenue.

…in that it affirms the classic doctrines of historic Christian orthodoxy as defined by the early church councils and formulated in such statements of faith as the Nicene Creed. These orthodox doctrines include such affirmations as the Trinity, the full humanity and the deity of Christ, and the historicity of the resurrection.

…in that it affirms, along with many other traditions, that the Bible is God’s authoritative Word, that human beings are made in the image of God and yet are sinners in need of redemption, that Christ was incarnate in human flesh, lived a sinless life, was crucified on the cross, and on the third day rose from the dead for our salvation, and that we are saved by the grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Thus we would be considered “Evangelicals” which comes from the Greek word for gospel, meaning “good news” of a Savior, which people need to hear because of the bad news of our sinfulness.

…in that, in addition to orthodox and evangelical doctrine, the distinctive doctrines of Reformers such as John Calvin, John Knox, and others, are also embraced in a way that distinguishes the Reformed tradition from some other traditions. Reformed theology is summarized in the Westminster Confession of Faith, a confession that dates from the mid-17th century and still serves as the doctrinal foundation of Maupin Avenue and many other reformed churches today. The Nicene Creed and the basic doctrinal commitments of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church will provide more insight for those wishing to learn more.
